삼위일체의 사랑 안에 머무는 신앙

“하느님께서 아들을 세상에 보내신 것은 세상이 아들을 통하여 구원을 받게 하시려는 것이다.” (요한 3,17)

오늘 복음에서 예수님께서는 하느님께서 세상을 얼마나 사랑하시는지를 알려 주십니다. 하느님께서는 심판보다 구원을 원하시며, 율법의 형식보다 사랑의 완성을 바라십니다. 그래서 삼위일체의 신비 역시 머리로 이해하는 교리가 아니라, 서로를 위해 자신을 내어주는 사랑의 신비라고 할 수 있습니다.

레지오 마리애 주회를 하다 보면 여러 모습을 보게 됩니다. 그중 가끔은 이런 말을 듣게 됩니다.

“나는 20년 동안 주회를 한 번도 빠진 적이 없습니다.”

물론 꾸준함과 충실함은 존중받아야 할 덕목입니다. 그러나 그 말 속에서 자신도 모르게 우월감이나 자기 의로움이 드러난다면, 우리는 잠시 생각해 보아야 합니다.

어떤 사람은 가족과 함께 시간을 보내기 위해, 어떤 사람은 성지순례를 위해, 또 어떤 사람은 특별한 사정으로 주회를 빠질 수도 있습니다. 그런데 이를 마치 신앙의 부족함으로 판단하거나, 자신은 한 번도 빠지지 않았다는 사실을 신앙의 훈장처럼 내세운다면, 그것이 과연 성화의 열매인지 돌아볼 필요가 있습니다.

예수님께서는 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.

“너희가 서로 사랑하면, 모든 사람이 그것을 보고 너희가 내 제자라는 것을 알게 될 것이다.” (요한 13,35)

주회를 빠지지 않는 기록이 우리를 구원하는 것이 아니라, 그 안에서 자라나는 사랑과 겸손이 우리를 주님께 더 가까이 이끕니다.

반대로 주회 단장이나 간부들이 어떻게든 단원들의 성화를 위해 주회를 열고 유지하려고 애쓰는 모습도 있습니다. 때로는 힘들고 부담스러워도 공동체를 위해 봉사하며, 자신 역시 성화의 길을 걷고자 노력합니다. 그것은 남을 통제하려는 마음이 아니라, 함께 성장하고자 하는 사랑의 수고일 것입니다.

결국 중요한 것은 “나는 몇 년 동안 빠지지 않았다”가 아니라, “나는 주회를 통해 얼마나 더 사랑하는 사람이 되었는가”입니다.

주회를 한 번도 빠지지 않았더라도 사랑이 없다면 그 충실함은 껍데기에 머물 수 있습니다. 반대로 부족함이 많고 때로는 빠질 때가 있더라도, 주님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하려는 마음으로 살아간다면 그 길 역시 성화의 길이 될 수 있습니다.

삼위일체이신 하느님께서는 완전한 사랑의 친교 안에 계십니다. 우리 역시 신앙생활의 횟수나 기록을 자랑하기보다, 그 사랑 안에서 더 겸손하고 더 너그럽고 더 따뜻한 사람이 되어 가는지 돌아보아야 하겠습니다.

이 거룩한 주일, 하느님께서 우리에게 바라시는 것은 단순한 출석의 완벽함이 아니라, 성부와 성자와 성령의 사랑을 닮아 가는 삶일 것입니다. 그리고 이제 남은 우리의 생애 동안에도, 신앙의 형식보다 사랑의 본질을 먼저 바라보며 영원한 생명을 향해 걸어갈 수 있기를 기도합니다.

“주님, 제가 신앙의 기록을 자랑하는 사람이 아니라, 사랑의 열매를 맺는 사람이 되게 하소서.” 아멘.

Living in the Love of the Holy Trinity

“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” 

(John 3:17)

In today’s Gospel, Jesus reveals the depth of God’s love for the world. God desires salvation rather than condemnation, and love rather than mere external observance. The mystery of the Holy Trinity is therefore not simply a doctrine to be understood by the mind, but a mystery of self-giving love.

While attending Legion of Mary meetings, we encounter many different expressions of faith. Occasionally, we hear statements such as:

“I have never missed a single meeting in twenty years.”

Certainly, perseverance and faithfulness are virtues worthy of respect. Yet if such a statement is accompanied by a sense of superiority or self-righteousness, it may be wise to pause and reflect.

Some members may occasionally miss a meeting because of a family commitment, a pilgrimage, a vacation, or unavoidable circumstances. If we begin to judge others as less faithful simply because they were absent, or if we wear our perfect attendance as a badge of spiritual achievement, we should ask ourselves whether this truly reflects the fruits of holiness.

Jesus said:

“This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35)

It is not a perfect attendance record that brings us closer to God, but the love, humility, and charity that grow within us through our faith.

On the other hand, there are presidents and officers of praesidia who sincerely strive to keep meetings going for the spiritual growth of all members. Despite personal sacrifices and challenges, they continue their service out of love for the community and a desire to grow in holiness themselves. Such efforts are not about control or recognition, but about helping one another walk toward Christ.

The real question is not, “How many years have I never missed a meeting?” but rather, “Have I become a more loving person because of my participation?”

A person may never miss a meeting and yet fail to grow in charity. Another may occasionally be absent but sincerely strive to love God and neighbor; such a person may be walking the path of holiness more faithfully than appearances suggest.

The Holy Trinity is a perfect communion of love. As Christians, we are called not to boast about our religious records, but to ask whether we are becoming more humble, more compassionate, more forgiving, and more loving.

On this blessed Sunday, may we remember that God desires more than flawless attendance. He desires hearts transformed by the love of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

And may the rest of our lives be spent seeking not merely the appearance of faithfulness, but the genuine love that leads to eternal life.

“Lord, help me not to take pride in my religious accomplishments, but to bear the fruits of love. May my faith draw me closer to You and to others. Amen.”
