<그리스도와 함께 드높여짐을 기다린다는 것>

그리스도의 재림과 부활을 기다리는 것은 같은 겁니다. 재림은 부활하신 그리스도께서 오셔서 우리의 죽은 몸을 하느님의 영광 가운데 그분와 함께 일으키시는 겁니다. 예수님의 부활과 우리의 부활은 우리 믿음의 가온입니다. 우리의 부활이 예수의 부활과 친밀한 관계를 맺고 있듯이 우리가 하느님의 사랑을 받는 것도 예수님께서 사랑받으시는 것과 관계를 맺고 있는 겁니다. 바오로 사도는 아주 단호하게 말씀합니다. "죽은 이들의 부활이 없다면 그리스도께서도 되살아나지 않으셨을 것입니다.  그리스도께서 되살아나지 않으셨다면, 우리의 복음 선포도 헛되고 여러분의 믿음도 헛됩니다." .(1코린15,13-14)

사실 우리의 기다림은 부활하신 그리스도를 기다리는 겁니다. 그분은 하느님과 함께 하는 영원한 삶 속에서 그분과 함께 우리를 일으켜 주실 겁니다. 예수님의 부활과 우리 자신의 부활이라는 지평에서  비로소 그분의 삶과 우리의 삶이 지닌 완전한 의미가 드러나는 겁니다. 바오로 사도의 말씀대로 "우리가 현세만을 위하여 그리스도께 희망을 걸고 있다면, 우리는 모든 인간 가운데에서 가장 불쌍한 사람일 것입니다."(1코린15,19) 사람들이 우리를 불쌍히 여기지 않아도 됩니다. 예수님을 따르는 우리는 이승의 짧은 삶의 한계를 훨씬 넘어서 볼 수 있고 지금 우리 몸으로 살고 있는 것은 단하나도 쓸모없이 버려지지 않음을 믿기 때문입니다.

Waiting for Christ’s second coming and waiting for the resurrection are one and the same. The second coming is the coming of the risen Christ, raising our mortal bodies with him in the glory of God. Jesus’ resurrection and ours are central to our faith. Our resurrection is as intimately related to the resurrection of Jesus as our belovedness is related to the belovedness of Jesus. Paul is very adamant on this point. He says: “If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ cannot have been raised either, and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is without substance, and so is your faith” (1 Corinthians 15:13-14).

Indeed, our waiting is for the risen Christ to lift us up with him in the eternal life with God. It is from the perspective of Jesus’ resurrection and our own that his life and ours derive their full significance. “If our hope in Christ has been for this life only,” Paul says, “we are of all people the most pitiable” (1 Corinthians 15:19). We don’t need to be pitied, because as followers of Jesus we can look far beyond the limits of our short life on earth and trust that nothing we are living now in our body will go to waste.
