2006-11-09 ㅣ No.5643 1970년대 초에 젊은이와 중년들의 귀를 흥겹게 울려주던 노래. 많은 귀들이 듣고 또 들어 못이 배겨 버렸다. 지금도 북미 웬만한 중노년의 자리에서 "Knock Three Times... " 한 소절만 흥얼거리면 금새 얼굴에 웃음들이 피어나면서 어깨를 들머거린다. 그리고 그 벅국 (천장) 세번 두드리는 마디와 파이프 두번 두드리는 마디에서는 아무 것이라도 들고 벽이라도 두드리며 함께 흥얼거린다.
당시 팝계의 거성들 - Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Joan Baez... 틈바구니에서도 이 노래 하나로 Tony Orlando의 이름은 사람들 가슴에 깊이 새겨지게 되었다. 마치도 쥴리 앤드루스가 The Sound of Music 영화 하나로 알려졌듯이.
바로 아래 층 아가씨에 몸이 달은 한 총각. 사랑의 스릴이 코믹하게 드럼의 가락에 어울려 나오고, Tony의 애소가 담긴 음성에 버무려져 무수한 가슴에 각인이 되어 오래도록 지워지지 않고 있는 것이다.
우리 나라에 한 때 Sad Movie 같은 노래도 애창되고 있었으나 Knock Three Times 는 가락과 가사의 음절들이 엇박자나 싱코페이션으로 비벼져서 흥얼거리면서도 제대로 부르는 사람은 한번도 듣지 못했다. 아마도 이 노래를 제대로 부를 수 있는 정도라면 다른 노래들은 수월할 것이다. 아마도 이 노래 부르기를 완성한다면 영어로 된 성가를 부르는 데도 도움이 되리라 믿는다.
