주제: 외면하지 말아야 할 공동체의 책임에 대하여 

교회는 진리를 따르는 공동체입니다.

그렇다면 우리는 한 가지 질문을 피할 수 없습니다.

지금 우리의 모습은 과연 그 진리에 충실한가 하는 점입니다.

현실 안에서 우리는 종종, 신앙의 본질보다 사람과 관계, 그리고 ‘가까운 자리’에 더 큰 의미를 두는 모습을 보게 됩니다. 특정 위치에 있는 이들 주변에 머무르거나, 그 영향력 안에 들어가는 것을 신앙의 일부처럼 여기기도 합니다.

문제는 여기서 멈추지 않습니다.

그 과정에서 누군가가 부당한 일을 겪거나 상처를 입을 때, 이를 알면서도 침묵하거나, 심지어 그 분위기에 편승하는 일까지 발생합니다.

직접 가해하지 않았다는 이유로 책임이 없다고 말하기 어렵습니다.

침묵과 방관 역시 또 다른 형태의 동조가 될 수 있기 때문입니다.

더 우려되는 점은, 이러한 문제들이 반복됨에도 불구하고 공동체 안에서 충분히 드러나거나 바로잡히지 않는 경우가 많다는 사실입니다. 외부에서는 이러한 모습을 보며, 오히려 다른 그리스도교 공동체보다 문제에 대한 인식과 자정의 속도가 더디게 느껴진다는 시선도 존재합니다. 이 평가가 불편하게 들릴 수 있지만, 그렇기에 더더욱 외면해서는 안 될 지점입니다.

신부님과 수녀님도 또한 역시 인간입니다.

그들의 열정과 헌신은 존중받아야 하지만, 그것이 언제나 올바른 결과로 이어지는 것은 아닙니다.

선의와 열정만으로 모든 것이 정당화될 수는 없습니다.

그 과정에서 누군가가 실제로 피해를 입고 있다면, 우리는 그것을 분명히 직시해야 합니다.

성경은 분명히 말합니다.

“그러므로 우리는 다시는 서로 심판하지 말고, 도리어 형제에게 걸림돌이나 장애물을 놓지 않도록 결심합시다.” (로마서 14,13)

그리고 또 이렇게 요구합니다.

“너희 가운데에서 큰 사람이 되려는 이는 너희를 섬기는 사람이 되어야 한다.” (마태오 20,26)

지금 우리에게 필요한 것은 더 많은 열심이 아니라, 더 분명한 분별과 책임일

것입니다.

좋은 일을 하지 못할 수는 있습니다. 그러나 적어도,

다른 이에게 피해를 주는 일에 협조하지는 말아야 합니다.

이 기준은 결코 높은 것이 아닙니다.

하지만 공동체를 지키기 위해 반드시 필요한 최소한입니다.

t itle: On the Responsibility We Can No Longer Ignore

The Church is a community called to follow the truth.

If so, there is one question we cannot avoid:

Are we truly being faithful to that truth today?

In reality, we often see a different pattern—where relationships, positions, and proximity to influence are given more weight than the essence of faith itself. Being close to certain individuals can be treated as if it were part of one’s spiritual standing.

But the issue does not end there.

When someone is harmed or treated unjustly within this dynamic, there are moments when people remain silent—or even go along with what is happening.

It is difficult to claim innocence simply because one did not directly cause the harm.

Silence and passivity can also become forms of complicity.

What is more concerning is that these patterns often repeat without being adequately acknowledged or corrected within the community. From the outside, there are perceptions that, compared to other Christian communities, awareness and self-correction in such matters may appear slower within the Catholic context. Whether uncomfortable or not, such perceptions should not be dismissed lightly.

Priests and nuns are human.

Their dedication deserves respect, but it does not guarantee that every action leads to the right outcome.

Good intentions and zeal alone cannot justify everything.

If real harm is being done, it must be recognized clearly.

Scripture states:

“Let us therefore stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.” (Romans 14:13)

And also:

“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” (Matthew 20:26)

What we need now is not more enthusiasm, but clearer discernment and accountability.

We may not always be able to do great good. But at the very least,

we must refuse to take part in causing harm.

This is not a high standard.

It is the minimum required to protect a healthy community.
