<프란치스코 교종, 21세기 사목자의 모범을 제시하는 "주교들의 진복팔단"을 나누다> 

지난 11월 22일 열린 이탈리아 주교총회에 즈음하여 교종께서 "착한 목자"그림(루카스 크라나흐Lucas Cranach, 1540년) 상본에 담아 모든 주교들에 주신 <주교들의 진복팔단> “The Beatitudes of the Bishop” ! 

교종께서 이탈리아 주교들은 물론 오늘날 5,000명이 넘는 전 세계 주교들을 격려하고 사목지침을 제시하는 내용입니다. 처음엔 교종께서 직접 쓰신 걸로 짐작했지만 나중에 알려진바론 나폴리 교구장 도메니코 바타글리아 Domenico Battaglia 대주교가 10월 31일 세 분의 보좌 주교 서품식 미사 강론에서 말씀한 걸 교종이 상본에 인쇄하여 주교들에게 보낸 겁니다. 

<주교들의 진복팔단>은 마태복음 5장의 산상설교에서 예수님께서 주신 여덟가지 참 행복을 모델로 삼은 겁니다. 교종의 바램은 전 세계 주교들과 앞으로 주교직에 오를 이들에게 실질적인 사목 지침을 주는 겁니다. 내용은 힘든 과제이며 교종이 평소 쓰는 말투가 많이 담겨 있습니다. 빈곤, 불의, 분쟁, 고통과 인간의 연약성으로 신음하는 21세기에 사목자가 지녀야 할 신원을 보여 줍니다. 백성을 섬기고 궂은 일에 손을 담그며 눈물을 닦아주고, 정의, 평화와 화해를 위해 애쓰며 최악의 상황에서도 선함을 찾고 형제애를 이루라고 촉구합니다. 또한 권력의 추구와 안락한 생활양식과 같이 주교들이 직면하는 유혹을 강조합니다. 

<주교들의 진복팔단>전문 

Full text of “The Beatitudes of the Bishop” 

1. 행복하여라, 가난하게 살며 제 삶의 양식을 나누는 주교들! 그 증거로 하늘나라를 세우기 때문이니.

Blessed is the bishop who makes poverty and sharing his lifestyle because with his witness he is building the kingdom of heaven. 

2. 행복하여라, 얼굴에 눈물이 마르지 않는 주교들! 눈물 속에 백성들의 슬픔과 사제들의 노고가 비춰지며, 고통받는 이들의 품 안에서 하느님의 위로를 발견하기 때문이니.

Blessed is the bishop who does not fear to water his face with tears, so that in them can be mirrored the sorrows of the people, the labors [fatigue] of the priests, [and] who finds in the embrace of the one who suffers the consolation of God. 

3. 행복하여라, 자신의 직무를 권력이 아니라 섬김으로 여기는 주교들! 온유함을 강점으로 삼으며, 모든 이에게 진심으로 하늘나라의 시민권을 건네주어 온유한 이들이 약속받은 나라에 살게 하기 때문이니.

Blessed is the bishop who considers his ministry a service and not a power, making meekness his strength, giving to all the right of citizenship in his own heart, so as to inhabit the land promised to the meek. 

4. 행복하여라, 자신을 교구청에 가두지 않고, 얼굴을 마주하기보다 통계수치에 전념하며 백성들의 이야기보다 행정절차에 관심을 기울이는 관료가 되지 않으며, 백성들의 편에 서서 하느님 정의의 꿈을 실현시키려 투쟁하는 주교들! 매일 기도의 침묵 가운데 뵙는 주님께서 친히 보살펴주시기 때문이니.

Blessed is the bishop who does not close himself in the palaces of government, who does not become a bureaucrat more attentive to statistics than to faces, to procedures than to [people’s] stories, who seeks to fight at the side of people for the dream of the justice of God because the Lord, encountered in the silence of daily prayer, will be his nourishment. 

5. 행복하여라, 세상의 비참함을 마음에 담아두고 사람의 영혼 속에서 하느님의 보물을 찾기 위해 자기 손이 진흙투성이가 되는 것을 두려워하지 않으면서도, 다른 이의 죄와 연약함에 걸려 넘어지지 않는 주교들! 자신의 비참함을 깨달으며 십자가에 못 박히시고 부활하신 주님을 바라보는 것이 한없이 용서하시는 인호(印號)가 될 것이기 때문이니.

Blessed is the bishop who has a heart for the misery of the world, who does not fear dirtying his hands with the mud of the human soul in order to find there the gold of God, who is not scandalized by the sin and fragility of the other because he is conscious of his own misery, because the look of the Risen Crucified One will be for him the seal of infinite pardon. 

6. 행복하여라, 두 마음을 버리고 애매하게 행동하지 않으며, 악행 가운데서도 심지어 선행을 꿈꾸는 주교들! 그는 백성들이 사는 도시의 모든 진창 속에서 선행을 찾는 가운데 하느님의 모습을 누릴 수 있기 때문이니.

Blessed is the bishop who wards off duplicity of heart, who avoids every ambiguous dynamic, who dreams good even in the midst of evil, because he will be able to enjoy the face of God, tracking it down in every puddle of the city of people. 

7. 행복하여라, 평화를 위해 일하는 주교들! 화해의 길에 동행하고, 통공(친교)의 씨앗을 사목자들의 마음에 심으며 갈라진 사회를 화해의 길에 동참시키며, 선의의 모든 형제 자매들과 손에 손을 잡고 형제애를 쌓아가기에 하느님께서 친히 아들로 인정하시기 때문이니.

Blessed is the bishop that works for peace, who accompanies the paths of reconciliation, who sows in the heart of the presbyterate the seed of communion, who accompanies a divided society on the pathway of reconciliation, who takes by hand every man and every woman of good will in order to build fraternity: God will recognize him as his son. 

8. 행복하여라, 복음을 위하여 담대하게 세상의 흐름에 거슬러 나아가는 주교들 ! 예루살렘을 향하시는 그리스도님의 얼굴처럼 "굳은" 표정을 짓지만 오해와 장애물에 뒤로 물러서지 않으며 하느님의 나라가 세상을 거슬러 다가온다는 것을 알기 때문이니.

Blessed is the bishop who for the Gospel does not fear to go against the tide, making his face “hard” like that of Christ heading to Jerusalem, without letting himself be held back by misunderstandings and by obstacles because he knows that the Kingdom of God advances in contradiction to the world.
